Rivalry with University of South Carolina
In the history of college football, the rivalry between Clemson University and the University of South Carolina is the third-longest continuously contested game in the country. Both schools are members of the Southeastern Conference.
The two universities were founded in 1801 and 1889, respectively. They share a common academic heritage, and the rivalry began long before Clemson was a college.
Throughout the years, the schools have fought on the field, in the streets, and in the classrooms. But the rivalry is most famous for one of its most memorable plays: “The Catch,” when Jerry Butler made a diving 20-yard touchdown reception in November 1977.
Since 1896, the two schools have fought 76 times. In that time, the game has been known for pranks, fights, and a brawl in the middle of the game. These pranks and fights have spanned 80 years and resulted in the rivalry being called off twice.
The rivalry between the two teams has been considered to be the longest, but it can’t continue this way. The teams must play more often. And the rivalry must be more intense.
The rivalry is also a part of the Palmetto Bowl. After a long break, the Palmetto Bowl was recognized as the official name of the rivalry in 2014. It will be played on Saturday, October 20 at Tigers’ Memorial Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.
As of 2016, the Gamecocks lead the all-time series by a wide margin. Clemson holds a record 19-10-1 against South Carolina at Memorial Stadium.
Both teams are looking to make a late run at the College Football Playoff. But Clemson must win out. If they do, they’ll have a shot at breaking the all-time record for most wins against USC.
Clemson’s record against the Gamecocks is 19-10-1, and the Bulldogs could break that record this year. Be sure to follow Clemson and South Carolina on Twitter for updates during the game! You’ll be able to catch the game on ABC at noon on Saturday. This will be the first game between the schools to be televised since 2006.
Fans from both sides will be in Columbia to watch this game.
