Charming Mountain Retreat Without Electricity Or Telephone

This mountain retreat has been restored from a rustic shepherd’s hut that was once used to make cheese. The hut is located in Cantal’s volcanic massif central in France. The Austrian Frederick Pfeffer restored the place with the help of local artisans and craftsmen using simple and natural materials. The atmosphere is very romantic and old-fashioned: without electricity, a wood-burning stove keeps the place warm and candles are used to light it at night. The benches of local artisans are covered with felt covers that are fastened with leather straps. Simple handcrafted wooden furniture and horsehair pillows that serve as beds when needed. The kitchen and shower are on the ground floor. The water comes from a nearby spring. I can’t think of a place that would be further away from civilization and at the same time more charming.
